Systematic solvent screening and selection for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHBV) recovery from biomass

The biotechnological production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) derived from organic waste streams by mixed microbial communities is well established at the pilot-level. However, there limited research on recovery biopolymer biomass, while its impact product quality and costs major. When applying solvent extraction, choice has a profound influence many aspects process design. This study provides framework to perform systematic screening for PHBV extraction. First, database was constructed 35 solvents that were assessed according six different selection criteria. Then, chosen further experimental analysis, including 1-butanol, 2-butanol, 2-ethyl hexanol (2-EH), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), acetone. main findings are extractions with acetone DMC obtained highest yields (91–95%) reasonably high purities (93–96%), where had key advantage possibility use water as anti-solvent. Moreover, results provided new insights in mechanisms behind extraction pointing out elevated temperatures efficiency less determined solvent’s solubility parameters more size. Although case-specific factors play role final choice, we believe this general strategy process.
